Global Warming: An “Oz” Theory

Gene G. Grell

In recent years there has been a hot topic circulating that could affect the entire world’s population.
Are we, the human race, really bringing on a dangerous global warming trend that will result in our own destruction? I think not. Call me a denier; call me a skeptic, but I’m just not buying it. Like others who have chosen a career path in Natural Resources I try to be a good steward for our planet, and when a topic such as this gets an avalanche of media attention, I find myself compelled to look into it. Through my research it became obvious to me that many of the main media resources and special interest groups are delivering information with a definite bias, and (shame on them) a hysteria raising sensationalism. While reading articles, reports, and viewing documentaries I found myself muttering…”Lions, and tigers, and bears…oh my!” Anyone wanting to buy into a human race guilt trip will find more than enough information on the internet to back their position. My challenge to these individuals is to look a little deeper. Wander off that yellow brick road that so many will try to set you on.

So much of the original data that was used to initially start the global warming scare has been proven to be incorrect, slanted, tampered with, or simply untrue that I now approach any new information with great skepticism. I don’t dismiss the idea of a current warming trend, as our planet has and will continue to go through periods of warming and cooling. It’s simply a natural occurrence. I do not believe that the human race is to blame, or has the ability to make any major alteration in these climate changes.

One of the most recent reviews of scientific evidence completed by the George C. Marshall Institute on climate change “confirms the earlier conclusion that predictions of an anthropogenic global warming have been greatly exaggerated, and that the human contribution to global warming over the course of the 21st century will be less than one degree Celsius and probably only a few tenths of a degree. Spread over a century, a temperature rise of this magnitude will be lost in the noise of natural climate fluctuations.” (http://www.marshall.org/article.php?id=79)

The more people that jumped on the global warming bandwagon, the more “experts” seemed to appear. Everyone wanted to be the Great and Powerful Oz, the professional with the data, projections and theory that would send us running and screaming from the building. Even politicians, such as ex-Vice President Al Gore, would have us believe that we are creating our own doom. Do you hear someone telling you “Don’t pay attention to that man behind the curtain?” I think everyone should look behind that curtain and realize that someone is trying to feed us the illusion that we, as a human race, need to, and can change the natural patterns of our planet’s ever-changing climate.

The media's whole purpose is to create sensationalism. It's how they make their money. If there is hysteria surrounding the climate change debate, my question is, so what? Maybe people will start reusing products, using less water, driving less or investing in electric cars. Maybe people will actually start to care about our planet, and want to preserve our natural places and the life that exists within them. Oh no!

If there is going to be hysteria about anything, it should be about protecting the world in which we live. It very well may even help us in the long run.

I'm interested in what you think about Richard Muller, a previously vocal skeptic of climate change, testifying beofre Congress that climate change is real?

Well written, Gene, taking an alternate view on an important topic.

Comment from Evan Duchow: So I don’t know exactly how to response to this. One thing is that yes the world doses have temperature changes but the issue is not the increase of temperature is that the rate at which it is happening. Right now the temperature is increasing at a faster rate than ever before. In the past the species of the world had the time to evolve with the changes in temperatures, species keep pushing their ranges further and further north. At least you do understand that the world is increasing temperature. So I hope that you know that burning fossil fuels releases more CO2 into the atmosphere. I also hope you know that CO2 causes the greenhouse effect. Show me the evidence that their data is wrong.
